HR interviews have always remained a mystery in the folklore of placements.Because there are no clear hard and fast clear references, no measures of success and most importantly no guarantee that anything will work.

Each company,each division and each HR would have different criteria to either select or reject a a candidate.So lets get down to the basics.

There are a lot of different sites out there which will tell you what are the usual questions in HR interview, what are the most useful answers to them etc. This article is NOT going to do the same. We are not here to tell you to what to say but rather help you to know how to say the answers.

Be confident :

This is the first quality that a HR would like to see in you. Be confident. Be sure of yourself. Walk in to the interview room as if you are Shahrukh khan giving an interview to a reporter. Believe in your mind that they are here to offer their job to you.. you are just there to remind them how awesome it would be for them to have you in their company. Answer clearly and do not fumble. If you are confident your body language will show it.

It doesn’t matter what the questions are and it mostly doesn’t matter what your answers are. All that matters is how you deliver those answers. In most of the HR interviews they are not testing your knowledge, they are testing your attitude and your outlook on life and how well you can adapt and handle different situations.

So don’t go in there and fumble and drag through the interview but rather shine and lead the interview like winner.

Just before you are entering the interview room ..think and believe you are the star of the show are the man of the are the host of the party and go in with that mindset.

Know your Resume:

Your Resume is the source material for the HR interviewers. It provides the basic platform on which they build the initial questions. So completely know your resume.Do not lie in your resume about your hobbies or interests. Write about those things about which you are passionate and can surely talk about for some time. This will help you lead the interview.

Be completely prepared for any question based on your resume down to the minute details.Ask yourself why you have written something in there, how well can you utilize it in your interview and what are the areas where the interviewer can try and corner you.

Be truthful.

When asked about something like a academic downfall which is visible in your not lie. Be open, free and let them know why you have faced a challenge and how you have now overcame that and became a better person. This converts a weak point to your advantage to show how you have grown.

However, none so far was able to come up with a perfect fool-proof resume format. There is a reason for that too; every role demands a different format. This is one reason you tailor the resume for every employer

very useful and that works better than others is- plain blank document. Start with this, and your resume will evolve into a crisp powerful tool in very short time. Create one with all the necessary information you can think of and THAT can work for you as a template. When you tailor your resume for different employers, CRUD (create, rename, update, delete) as required.

Use effective titles
Your work experiences and/ or project details can be listed in multiple formats. One- AS IS factual details. While this is straightforward, some details appear boring. Two- innovative/ creative/ interesting alternatives if possible. These attract attention and make employers go through the details. Choice is yours.

Use bullet points
It makes reading and analysis easy. Try to include details as bullet points (or a tabular format can work too) in contrast to the story-like paragraphs.

Important information first
When you have to list more than one detail, organize those in the order of importance. When recruiters have less time, they tend to look at the first couple of items and move on.

What goes where?
Your name, a working phone number and your email address should be on the top. Preferably, with a larger font size and emphasis than the rest of the document. You can include achievements, skillset, experience and any other information you perceive as relevant after that.

How to Clear a Technical Interview - Tips for Interviews

In this section we will tell you how easy it is for a fresher to clear a technical interview stated if he follows the basic tips/rules/mantra:

Technical Interview is part of the recruitment process for almost all the companies and this is the second biggest elimination round after the written test.

Well, I will assume here as you are a fresher trying to get into a software company (since most does irrespective of their branch).

Any software firm small or big wants their employees to know the basics of the subjects like,

  • Programming
  • software engineering
  •  operating systems
  • Databases
  • Computer Networks.

Having said that they won’t expect you to know every part and parcel of the subjects, rather they would look for someone who at least knows what they are for.

Now if you are asked to write a C-Program which does check whether a given integer/string is a palindrome or not (which is part of lab programs for almost all the universities in the country in the 1st year), he would expect that you will write it easily and if you fail to do so, please don’t expect him to select you.

So what would we suggest is that, you should have basic knowledge on the aforementioned subjects and we will also tell you the areas you should concentrate in each subject.

1. Programming

In any technical interview, it is obvious that you would be asked to write some programs and mostly in C,C++ & Java  .

To be confident at this area, you should know the basic syntax of all these subjects as the semantic or logic remains the same.

Start with C, learn variables, operators, control structures, functions & pointers (the most important stuff), structures and files. Then go for C++ and java, try to understand the differences between all the three precisely.

OOPS is the most important & probable topic, where you might get questions from.

Below is the list of the most frequently asked programs that you must learn to clear this round.

a)      Write a C program to swap two numbers without using a third variable.

b)      Write a C program to check whether the given number or a string is palindrome or not.

c)       Write a C program to create a Pascal triangle.

d)      Write a C program to perform matrix multiplication and addition.

e)      Write a C program which performs bit manipulation (&,|,etc) of a given number.

f)       Also, learn programs which does basic file manipulations (creation, writing data and reading)

2. Software Engineering

This is the most important & also a boring subject, since it is mostly theoretical.

Not many interviewers ask questions on this subject in the technical interview, but it is always better to know the basics and be on the safer side.

Questions in this subject would be basically on the following topics,

a.       Phases of Software Development Life Cycle

b.      Process Models like Waterfall model, agile model etc.

c.       Cyclomatic complexity of a software

d.      Basics of software testing(white box, black box testing)

If you can learn all these, then you could possibly answer all the questions in the interview.
